Freelance Video Editor Contract: Usage Rights, Raw Footage & Turnaround
Platform usage rights, raw footage ownership, revision limits, and licensed-music liability — what a generic freelance template misses for video editing work.
Video editing contracts run into a specific set of issues that don't show up in most other creative freelance work — mainly around where the finished video can be used, who owns the raw footage, and who's on the hook if licensed music gets flagged. Here's what to cover.
What's specific to video editing work
Usage rights, by platform. A client licensing a video for organic social posts is different from licensing it for paid advertising, and different again from broadcast or in-perpetuity brand use. State exactly where and how long the client can use the final video — this is one of the most common sources of disputes after a project wraps, especially when a client repurposes a video for a use case never discussed.
Raw footage ownership and return. Does the client get the raw, unedited footage and project files, or only the final export? If you're shooting the footage yourself, this needs to be explicit — some editors retain raw footage as their own working material, others deliver it as part of the package. Either way, say so upfront, not after a client asks for it.
Revision rounds, explicitly capped. Editing is iterative by nature, which makes "a few rounds of revisions" especially risky to leave undefined. State the number of included revision rounds and the cost of additional ones — otherwise "can we try a different cut" can repeat indefinitely.
Who's liable for licensed music and stock footage. If you're sourcing music or stock footage on the client's behalf, clarify who's responsible for licensing fees and who's liable if something gets flagged for a copyright claim after publishing — you, for sourcing it, or the client, for approving and publishing it.
Turnaround time and rush fees. State your standard turnaround from receiving footage/brief to first draft, and whether faster turnaround is available at a rush rate. Video work often comes with tight external deadlines (a launch date, an event), so this avoids assuming "ASAP" is included in the base price.
Credit and attribution. If you want an editing credit on published videos, or explicitly don't need one, say so — this is a minor point most contracts skip but that's easy to settle upfront.
A practical structure
- Scope: project type, expected length, number of deliverables (e.g. main cut plus platform-specific edits).
- Raw footage and project file delivery terms.
- Usage rights: platforms, paid vs. organic, duration.
- Revision rounds included and additional-round pricing.
- Music/stock licensing responsibility.
- Turnaround time and rush fee terms.
- Credit/attribution preference.
SignFastAi's free Creative & Web Design Services Agreement template covers revisions, usage rights, and a kill fee as a starting point — add the raw-footage and music-licensing specifics above, since those are unique enough to video work that a generic creative contract doesn't cover them.
Getting it signed and invoiced
Send the contract as a secure signing link instead of a PDF attachment — see how freelancers get contracts signed faster for why that matters when a project's on a tight deadline. Once it's signed, a free invoice or estimate for the project takes about two minutes.
